Flooding is possible - be prepared

Flood alert for Bourne Rivulet

The water level in the Bourne Rivulet remains high but continues to slowly fall. Upstream at Vernham Deane, the groundwater, which is controlling the level in the river, has been reducing for almost two weeks. Very minor impact flooding is affecting land in St Mary Bourne. Unsettled weather with showers and rain, heavy at times is now expected for the next 5 days (to Saturday 30/3/24). Half a month’s rainfall (40mm could be recorded in this time). Despite this, the groundwater level will continue to fall. A small temporary rise (2-4cms by the end of the week) will be seen in the river, increasing flood depths in fields. The current forecast suggests further wet weather is likely for the next 10 days. Whether the groundwater continues to fall, and the overall situation improves, will be very dependent on the volume of rain which affects the area next week. Our flood barrier will remain in place at St Mary Bourne to reduce flood risk. We will update or remove this message by Friday 29/3/24 by 17:00.
