Flooding is possible - be prepared

Flood alert for Groundwater flooding in the Alton area

Groundwater levels remain high at our Farringdon borehole near Alton. Groundwater levels remain above normal levels for this time of year and are currently stabilised at this level. The catchment remains sensitive to rainfall due to the saturated ground and levels may start to increase again if we receive further rainfall. Low-lying land, gardens, roads and cellars will therefore continue to be at risk of flooding. Due to the nature of groundwater behaviour, this situation could continue for several weeks or longer. An overall stabilising trend is expected as we move out of the winter period. However, any heavy rainfall may change the trends and prolong high levels or cause levels to rise again.

We are continuing to monitor groundwater levels and will update this message on 30/04/2024, or as the situation changes.
