Flooding is possible - be prepared

Flood alert for Groundwater flooding in the Great Shefford area

Groundwater levels are high but stable at our observation borehole at Northfield Farm near Great Shefford in response to the winter rainfall across the area. Groundwater levels are higher than normal for this time of year and are at a level where communities may now be affected by flooding from groundwater. Groundwater levels are currently steady, but could rise further following persistent or heavy rain. The catchment remains sensitive to rainfall due to saturated ground and high groundwater levels. Low-lying land, gardens, roads, and cellars will therefore continue to be at risk of flooding. Due to the nature of groundwater behaviour, this situation could continue for several weeks or longer.

We are continuing to monitor groundwater levels and will update this message on 01/03/2024, or as the situation changes.
